 JENA mayor, police chief booked

JENA, LaSalle Parish sheriff's officials said Thursday that the town's mayor and chief of police turned themselven in late Wednesday for booking.

A grand jury indicted Mayor James Robbins and Police Chief George King on a variety of charges.

Sheriff's officials said Robbins was booked on charges of simple battery, two counts public intimidation and unauthorized use of a movable.  King, Robbins' uncle, was booked for malfeasance in office.

The men were immediately released.

One of Robbins' charges stems from an alleged fight between him and City Councilman Gary Compton.  The two got into a fight at the Jena Town Hall earlier this month.  Compton told investigators Robbins punched him during the incident.
